Which Concrete Coating is Best?Epoxy vs. Polyurea/Polyaspartic

You’ve Got a couple Choices – let us help you make an educated decision.

Have you heard of Epoxy floor coatings? Are they right for you? The differences in epoxy and polyaspartic flooring are vast. Here’s some information to help decide which garage floor coating is best for you.

The most common garage floor coating systems are full flake coatings. The similarities in Epoxy flake and Polyurea/Polyaspartic flake systems are aesthetically the same. Meaning the finished products look relatively the same. Neither product is a paint. Both products seal the concrete while acting as a bonding agent when applied to your bare concrete. It’s how they react to the elements which sets them apart.

Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings

Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings are a lower cost option for garages. At first epoxy coatings look amazing, especially when the product is applied in thicker coats.

This is why many epoxy systems are marketed as Do It Yourself solutions that a homeowner can install with minimal expense, limited tools and experience.

Unfortunately with epoxy garage coatings you will have a beautiful finished product at first but with no longevity. Epoxy coatings are susceptible to UV causing them to Yellow over time.

They are also prone to fading, peeling, and cracking due to their lack of elasticity and heat resistance.

Extreme Temperature Effects

With Epoxy systems the sun will start to fade your floors unevenly because of how they are exposed to the sun. Also the heat from hot automotive tires will eventually erode the top layer of epoxy because of its lack of heat resistance. This is typically known as hot tire pickup. There are specific times when epoxy coatings are right but only when extreme temperatures, sunlight and hot tires aren’t a factor. Think showrooms or basements.

Polyurea/Polyaspartic Garage Floor Coatings

Polyurea/Polyaspartic Garage Floor Coatings do have a downside. This is that they set extremely quickly. The working time is much shorter than Epoxys. As a Do It Yourself homeowner you could have a real mess on your hands if you do not act fast enough.

However, Polyurea/Polyaspartic are the recommended choice for garage floors for numerous reasons. These coatings have greater elasticity epoxy coatings allowing them to react better to temperature and environmental changes.

Epoxy systems need to be maintained often, whereas Polyurea/Polyaspartic systems truly are a set it and forget it coating. This is why most Polyurea/Polyaspartic systems are guaranteed by a lifetime warranty where Epoxy systems have limited warranty if any warranty at all.

One-Day Concrete Coatings

Due to the quick setting properties of Polyurea/Polyaspartic coatings most applications can be completed in as little as one day with Professional installation using professional equipment. Polyurea/Polyaspartic coatings are Faster, Safer and will Last Longer than other coatings.

Most Endure customers choose polyaspartic flooring for Garage, and outdoor applications so they never have to worry about upgrading their project ever again.
